TULSA, Okla. – With a tie game in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Omaha Mavericks fell in the series finale at Oral Roberts, 2-1, Sunday (May 13).
Oral Roberts (33-16, 22-5) defeated the Mavericks (14-32, 9-15) with a sacrifice fly off loaded bases to sweep the three-game series.
Andrew Brighton (2-3) pitched 8.2 innings and tossed five strikeouts with two walks. Oral Roberts' Brady Womacks earned the win (2-3) with one strikeout and two hits, while starter Justin McGregor threw six strikeouts allowing five hits on 7.1 innings.
After the Golden Eagles recorded back-to-back singles to advance a runner to third in the bottom of the first, a ground ball into a double play scored the runner. Omaha put runners in scoring position in the top of the third, but could not capitalize.
The game tied up in the top of the fifth when
Braden Rogers scored from third on a wild pitch that also advanced
Keil Krumwiede to third. The Mavericks could not get one to pass through which left Krumwiede stranded to close out the half inning. Neither team could produce any offense until the bottom of the seventh, when
Cole Thibodeau reached first off an error and then stole second to put himself in scoring position, but he too was left on base.
Omaha had a chance in the top of the ninth when
Ben Palensky doubled down the left field line to put himself in scoring position.
Max Gamm then reached first on a fielder's choice after Palensky was tagged out at third. Oral Roberts then recorded a double play to enter the bottom of the ninth.
The Golden Eagles loaded the bases off a throwing error, a sacrifice bunt and then an intentional walk with one out. From there, a fly out to center brought the runner from third home to close out the series.
The Mavericks return to action Tuesday (May 15) for an 11 a.m. matinee showdown against in-state rival Creighton at TD Ameritrade Park. Following the final non-league game of the season, the Mavericks welcome Western Illinois at home for a three-game series May 17-19. Links to live audio and stats can be found on OMavs.com
