OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team fell 8-1 in a Wednesday (May 15) matinee showdown against Creighton at TD Ameritrade Park.
Both
Grant Suponchick (1-for-3) and
Thomas DeBonville (1-for-4) recorded hits in the game. On the mound,
Jake Pennington fell to 2-8 with a strikeout and seven hits allowed through 4.0 innings, while Creighton's Denson Hull earned his first win of the season (1-0), with six tossed strikeouts, two hits allowed and one run through 5.0 innings.
The Mavericks were able to get on the board first off Suponchick's single to left field that brought home DeBonville from second to take a 1-0 lead over Creighton.
After putting a runner in scoring position, the Bluejays evened the score in the bottom of the second off a single to left field that brought home an RBI.
In the bottom of the third, Creighton put a runner in scoring position off a double to center. With one out, the Mavericks fell behind 2-1 after a single to left which brought home a runner from third base. Back-to-back singles to left field scored another pair of runs for Creighton to make it 4-1.
Omaha fell into an 8-1 deficit after Creighton loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, which preceded a pair of singles that brought home four runs. The Mavericks finished with one run on two hits and two errors, while the Bluejays totaled 13 hits and no errors.
The Mavericks return to Seymour Smith Park this Thursday (May 17) through Saturday (May 19) for a Summit League home series against Western Illinois. The series finale on Saturday also marks Senior Day for Omaha's senior class. Live stats and audio will be linked on OMavs.com
