Omaha Drops First Game Against Western Illinois At Home

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team dropped a 4-1 series opener at Seymour Smith Park to the Western Illinois Leathernecks Thursday afternoon (May 17). 

Omaha falls to 14-34 overall and 9-16 in Summit League play, while the Leathernecks improve to 16-27 with a 13-11 mark in league action. Starting pitcher Joey Machado falls to 4-7 overall as he totaled three strikeouts with five hits and three runs allowed through 7.0 innings. For the Leathernecks, Ryan Dunne improved to 4-6 overall with nine strikeouts, seven hits allowed, one walk and one run on 6.1 innings. Colan Borchers picked up his fifth save of the season in relief. 

Max Gamm led the way for Omaha going 3-for-4 with a run, while Ben Palensky went 1-for-3 with an RBI. 

Western Illinois was able to get on the board first with a single to right field that brought home a runner from second for an RBI. 

Omaha had its first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth off two consecutive singles by Grant Suponchick and Braden Rogers. After Cole Thibodeau reached on a fielder's choice, Suponchick advanced to third with two outs, but the Leathernecks were able to get a strikeout to close out the inning.

In the top of the sixth, the Leathernecks loaded the bases with one out, but the Mavericks were able to leave all three on base stranded after a strikeout by Machado, followed by a ball popped up to Keil Krumwiede at short. 

Omaha found itself in a three-run deficit after the Leathernecks hit a two-run homer to left field with one out to increase the lead. 

Ben Palensky was able to get the Mavericks on the board with a single RBI up the middle that brought home Max Gamm from second in the bottom of the seventh. The Mavericks were the able to load the bases in the same inning, but Western Illinois was able to close out the half inning and keep a two-run lead. 

The Leathernecks were able to get a single to right center that plated a runner from third in the bottom of the eighth to make it 4-1. 

Omaha is back in action tomorrow (May 18) for a 2 p.m. matchup in the second game of the series against Western Illinois. Links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
