Omaha Drops Series Opener at BYU, 8-1

PROVO, Utah -- The Omaha baseball team opened its final non-conference weekend Thursday evening, falling 8-1 to BYU at Miller Field. The Mavericks are now 4-9 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 6-6.
 
Jordan Wood (1-1) threw a complete game for the win, limiting Omaha to one run on four hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. Grant Suponchick (1-1) took the loss, surrendering four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.0 innings.
 
Thomas DeBonville scored Omaha's only run of the night after stroking a triple in the ninth, and Cole Thibodeau, Keil Krumwiede and Tyler Daugherty also registered a single apiece. DeBonville and Thibodeau both extended their team-leading hitting streaks to six games.
 
BYU got two hits each from Daniel Schneemann (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI), Brian Hsu (2-for-3, one run) and Kyle Dean (2-for-4). Brock Hale was 1-for-4 with three runs driven in.
 
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second with a first-pitch solo shot to left by Hale, then extended it to 4-0 with a three-run third inning.
 
Following three scoreless frames with Cal Hehnke on the mound, BYU struck for another run in the seventh, then added three more in the eighth to make it 8-0.
 
In the ninth, DeBonville sent his one-out triple to left and scored on an error, which brought the final tally to 8-1.
