OMAHA, Neb. -- A late surge by Wichita State erased the Omaha baseball team's lead Saturday afternoon, as the Mavericks fell 4-3 in the series opener at Eck Stadium. Omaha is now 2-2 on the season, while the Shockers improve to 4-0.
The win went to Clayton McGinness (1-0), who threw 2.0 shutout innings in relief with one hit and a strikeout. Right-hander
Jake Pennington (1-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs on two hits and three walks with a strikeout over 3.0 innings. Tommy Barnhouse (2) earned the save.
Thomas DeBonville made his Maverick debut, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two more driven in.
Max Gamm added another pair of hits with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, scoring once.
Wichita State mustered just four hits as a team, and Mason O'Brien led the way at 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Shockers got on the board in the third inning, as Luke Ritter drew a leadoff walk and later scored on O'Brien's RBI single through the right side.
Omaha answered in the fifth, plating three runs on three hits. With one out,
Adam Caniglia walked and Gamm doubled to right to put two on, and DeBonville followed with a two-run double to right center. Two batters later,
Keil Krumwiede sent a two-out RBI single up the middle to score DeBonville, giving the Mavericks the 3-1 advantage.
WSU tied it in the next frame with an RBI triple from Travis Young and RBI groundout from Gunnar Troutwine. In the seventh, Ritter got on with a leadoff single, advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt, then crossed on O'Brien's sacrifice fly to give the Shockers the 4-3 lead.
