WICHITA, Kan. -- The Omaha baseball team's weekend series at Wichita State concluded Sunday, as the Mavericks fell 3-0 and 6-2 in a doubleheader at Eck Stadium. Omaha is now 2-4 on the season, while WSU improves to 6-0.
GAME 1 -- WICHITA STATE 3, OMAHA 0
Wichita State got 7.1 shutout innings from Liam Eddy (2-0), who earned the win after allowing just three hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The loss went to
Joey Machado (0-2), who went 7.0 innings in his start and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
Chandler Sanburn threw the final 1.2 innings with four strikeouts for his first save.
Alec Bohm was 2-for-4 to lead WSU offensively.
Adam Caniglia went 1-for-2 with a double for Omaha.
After four and a half scoreless innings, Wichita State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a solo homer from Dayton Dugas.
The Shockers added a pair of runs in the seventh, with Alex Jackson scoring on Gunnar Troutwine's RBI groundout and Dugas coming in on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
GAME 2 -- WICHITA STATE 6, OMAHA 2
In the second game of the twinbill, Connor Lungwitz (1-0) picked up the win with 6.0 shutout innings, holding Omaha to two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Payton Kinney (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits and a walk with a pair of punchouts over 4.1 innings.
Cal Hehnke threw 3.2 innings out of the pen, holding WSU to a run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Braden Rogers registered a 2-for-4 plate performance and scored once for his second multi-hit effort of the year.
Bohm again led WSU with a 2-for-3 showing with a homer, one of three for the Shockers in game two.
Like the first game, both teams were scoreless until the fifth, when WSU broke through for five runs on five hits. Jacob Kaztfey led off with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Jordan Boyer. Alex Jackson then singled in Boyer, followed by a two-run homer from Greyson Jenista and a solo shot from Bohm to push the lead to 5-0.
Omaha got on the board in the seventh, when Rogers singled to left with one out and
Max Gamm added a double down the third base line to put two runners on.
Henry Wittren followed with an RBI groundout to plate Rogers, trimming the lead to 5-1.
The Shockers got the run back in the bottom half of the frame, as a solo homer from Hunter Gibson made it 6-1.
The Mavericks crossed their last run in the eighth.
Cole Thibodeau led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on
Grant Suponchick's pinch-hit single through the left side, then scored on a passed ball, bringing the final tally to 6-2.
