Thurman Hits Scoring Milestone as Omaha Falls 88-84 to SDSU

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha men's basketball team got within two with 14 seconds left Saturday night, but the effort fell short as the Mavericks dropped an 88-84 decision to South Dakota State before a season-high crowd of 3,038 fans at Baxter Arena. UNO is now 11-11 (4-5 Summit League) on the year, while the Jackrabbits improve to 10-14 (3-6).

Senior guard Marcus Tyus registered a team-high 20 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the field with three 3-pointers and a 7-of-7 effort at the free throw line. He added three rebounds, three assists and three steals for the night.

Junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman became the 38th player in program history and the second this season to reach the 1,000 career points milestone. The Omaha Central product finished with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting along with five rebounds, a steal and a block. Thurman now has 1,006 points over 83 games as a Maverick.

Sophomore forward Mitch Hahn added another 18 points with four rebounds, and senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins rounded it out with 14 points, a team-leading six boards and six assists, two steals and a block.

South Dakota State was led by game highs of 33 points and nine rebounds from Summit League Preseason Player of the Year Mike Daum. Chris Howell (16), Reed Tellinghuisen (13) and Lane Severyn (11) also scored in double figures.

Omaha shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field and 84.6 percent (22-of-26) at the free throw line. SDSU finished at 50.0 percent (31-of-62) from the floor and 88.2 percent (15-of-17) at the stripe while outboarding Omaha 38-23.

Thurman led the charge for Omaha in the first half, scoring 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while SDSU got 22 points from Daum. The Jackrabbits erased an early 17-10 Maverick lead and went ahead at 21-19 on a Daum three, eventually building their largest lead at 41-27 with 3:27 left on a three-point play from Tellinghuisen. UNO and SDSU shot an identical 51.5 percent (17-of-33) in the half, but the Jackrabbits held a 52-43 lead by the intermission.

In the second half, Omaha evened the score at 56-56 less than four minutes in, courtesy of back-to-back threes by Tyus and sophomore guard Zach Jackson. SDSU quickly surged ahead from there, taking a 72-60 advantage with 10:12 to go on a Howell layup.

With 5:17 left, Omaha found itself down 10 but created an 11-3 run with consecutive layups from Hahn and Hollins, a combined five free throws from the duo and a Thurman jumper. By 2:09, the Mavericks had pulled within two at 83-81.

Daum followed with three straight misses on the other end -- the third of which was blocked by Hollins -- but his next shot finally dropped to spot the Jacks an 85-81 edge. Hahn then hit his second of two free throws to make it a three-point game again, but Daum drew another foul with 22 seconds to go and made his second of two free throws to put SDSU up by four once more. Though two more foul shots by Hollins trimmed it to 86-84 with 14 seconds left, Howell responded with two more makes at the line to finish it off, 88-84.

Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 1, hosting South Dakota. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Baxter Arena, and Gary Sharp and John Karhoff will have the radio call on 1180 Zone 2. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
