Omaha Wins Third Straight, Defeats NDSU 7-2

Box Score FARGO, N.D. -- The Omaha baseball team extended its win streak to three games Saturday afternoon, defeating North Dakota State 7-2 at Newman Outdoor Field. The Mavericks now improve to 24-21 (14-9 Summit League), while the Bison drop to 25-21 (9-14 Summit League).

Junior left-hander Sam Murphy (3-4) was credited with the win, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Parker Trewin (0-2) took the loss for NDSU, giving up five runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Three Mavericks registered three hits apiece for the day: senior Cole Gruber (3-for-6, two runs, one RBI), junior Sam Palensky (3-for-5, one run) and senior Colin Leif (3-for-5, one RBI). Senior Clayton Taylor (2-for-3, one run, two RBI) and freshman Riley Herold (2-for-5, two runs) also had multi-hit efforts, while senior Alex Schultz finished 1-for-3 and scored three times.

Omaha's offense got started early, plating a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the first and second innings. Gruber led off the game with a single through the left side and Taylor doubled down the right field line, after which Schultz singled up the middle to drive in both, which gave UNO a 2-0 lead after the first.

In the second, freshman Jack Kalina keyed a leadoff single through the right side and Herold doubled down the left field line to open the frame. Leif then added an RBI single to right, which scored Kalina. Two batters later, Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases with one down, and Schultz was hit by a pitch to score Herold for a 4-0 edge.

North Dakota State got a run back in the third, when Ben Petersen's RBI single to short drove in Drew Fearing to make it 4-1.

It didn't take long for the Mavericks to respond, as Gruber got on with a one-out triple in the fourth and scored immediately via Taylor's RBI single to right center, pushing UNO's lead to 5-1.

NDSU added another run in the sixth with Logan Busch's RBI single to right to bring in Mason Pierzchalski for a 5-2 tally. It was the last Bison hit of the day, as sophomore right-handers David Flattery and Ryan Cate combined for three shutout innings to finish the game.

The Mavericks' offense, meanwhile, continued to surge in the final two innings. In the eighth, Herold and Leif both got on with singles to left and Gruber reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases with no outs. Taylor was then hit by a pitch, bringing home Herold for a 6-2 lead. In the ninth, Palensky and Leif registered a single apiece, and Gruber delivered an RBI single to right that drove in Palensky for a 7-2 final score.

Omaha and North Dakota State conclude their series on Sunday, May 8, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, N.D. Links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
