Two batters later, Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases with one down, and Schultz was hit by a pitch to score Herold for a 4-0 edge.
North Dakota State got a run back in the third, when Ben Petersen's RBI single to short drove in Drew Fearing to make it 4-1.
It didn't take long for the Mavericks to respond, as Gruber got on with a one-out triple in the fourth and scored immediately via Taylor's RBI single to right center, pushing UNO's lead to 5-1.
NDSU added another run in the sixth with Logan Busch's RBI single to right to bring in Mason Pierzchalski for a 5-2 tally. It was the last Bison hit of the day, as sophomore right-handers
David Flattery and
Ryan Cate combined for three shutout innings to finish the game.
The Mavericks' offense, meanwhile, continued to surge in the final two innings. In the eighth, Herold and Leif both got on with singles to left and Gruber reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases with no outs. Taylor was then hit by a pitch, bringing home Herold for a 6-2 lead. In the ninth, Palensky and Leif registered a single apiece, and Gruber delivered an RBI single to right that drove in Palensky for a 7-2 final score.
