STILLWATER, Okla. –
Kevin Gordon of the Omaha men's golf team shaved eight strokes off his round one score to move up the leaderboard at the NCAA Regional on Tuesday.
Gordon shot 80 in the middle round of the 54-hole event to move into 68th place, up from a tie for 71st, in the 75-player field. He ranks third in scoring among the five individual golfers competing with a total score of 168.
“Kevin obviously played a lot better than yesterday,” said head coach
Seth Porter. “He had just two bad swings on the first nine that cost him, but he did a good job of sticking to our game plan of making a lot of pars.”
Starting the day on the 10th hole, Gordon had just two over-par holes, recording a double-bogey on the par-4 10th and a triple-bogey on the par-3 15th. Otherwise, he shot par.
Gordon earned his first birdie of the tournament with a three on the par-4 fourth hole. On the final three holes, seven through nine, he played four over but still posted a score of 39 for the inward nine.
“The last three holes were playing straight into a 15-20 mile an hour wind,” said Porter. “They were tough holes to start with and then mix in the wind, and things can get interesting in a hurry.
“He played well though, and we're looking to improve and learn more tomorrow.”
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. from the Karsten Creek Golf Club.
