ORU Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader From Mavericks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TULSA, Okla. -- The Omaha baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Oral Roberts Saturday afternoon, falling 6-3 and 3-2 at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Mavericks are now 17-19 (8-7 Summit League), while the conference-leading Golden Eagles improve to 23-12 (12-3 Summit League).

GAME 1 -- ORAL ROBERTS 6, OMAHA 3
Freshman Grant Suponchick led the Mavericks offensively in the first game of the day, finishing 2-for-4 with a run driven in.

Nick Wood (4-1) earned the win on the mound for ORU, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Junior left-hander Sam Murphy (2-2) was dealt the loss, surrendering six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Brady Womacks also produced his seventh save of the season for ORU, throwing a hitless, scoreless ninth inning.

Oral Roberts tallied first in the bottom of the first inning, recording three runs on two hits and an error. Nick Rotola walked and Nick Roark reached on a Maverick miscue and advanced to second on the throw, putting both runners in scoring position. Two batters later, Noah Cummings drove in both with a two-run single to center. He followed by stealing second and coming in via Brent Williams' RBI single to right for a 3-0 lead.

Omaha then matched ORU with a three-spot of its own in the top of the third, fueled with four hits. UNO loaded the bases with no outs on a single to center by freshman Jack Kalina, a walk by senior Alex Schultz and an infield single by senior Cole Gruber. Senior Clayton Taylor then singled to short to score Kalina, and sophomore Adam Caniglia reached on a fielder's choice to score Schultz. Two batters later, Suponchick pushed a two-out single through the left side, which plated Taylor for a 3-3 stall.

ORU broke through the tie in the fourth with two runs on two hits, all with two outs. Trevin Sonnier walked and Chase Stafford singled up the middle to put two on for Rotola, who doubled down the left field line to score both for a 5-3 Eagle lead. Oral Roberts added another run in the fifth when Matt Whatley sent a solo homer to left, bringing the score to 6-3.

GAME 2 -- ORAL ROBERTS 3, OMAHA 2
Josh McMinn (4-2) picked up the win in the evening game of the twinbill, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Corey Binger (4-3) took the loss, giving up three runs on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts in his 6.0-inning outing.

Caniglia and freshman Riley Herold each went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the contest, with Caniglia also driving in a run.

Oral Roberts came out swinging in the bottom of the first, using three hits to score their first run. Rotola led off with a single through the right side, and Cummings came up with a single to left three batters later. Williams followed immediately with an RBI single to right, scoring Rotola for a 1-0 lead.

After Binger limited the Golden Eagles to one hit over the second, third and fourth innings, and Omaha finally took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth courtesy of two runs on three hits. Herold drew a one-out, full-count walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a Kalina groundout. Caniglia then singled through the left side to drive in Herold, tying the game at 1-1. Schultz added a single up the middle to put two runners aboard, and Gruber delivered an RBI single through the left side to score Caniglia and put the Mavericks ahead, 2-1.

ORU came back to knot the game again at 2-2 in the fifth, when Roark led off with a triple to left center and later scored on Cummings' RBI groundout.

The Golden Eagles then regained the lead in the seventh, stringing together three hits for the go-ahead run. Rotola started it off with a double to left center, and a Roark single to third put runners on the corners. Whatley then singled through the left side to knock in Rotola, giving ORU a one-run advantage, which was all it needed to escape with the 3-2 win.

Omaha begins a five-game homestand next Wednesday, April 20, hosting Kansas State. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Werner Park, and links to live audio and stats will be available on OMavs.com. Tickets are available for purchase at OmahaStormChasers.com.
