GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Junior
Ben Maskus shot UNO's lowest 54-hole score in the Division I era, leading the Omaha men's golf team at the Desert Shootout on Saturday.
Maskus shot a final round score of 68, four under par, to finish at 213 for the tournament. It was one stroke better than the previous record set by
Karl Krieser almost one year ago to the day at the Wallace Jones Invitational at Louisiana Monroe.
Maskus carded six birdies against just two bogeys in the final round to finish in a tie for 36th overall in the field of 116 golfers.
Maskus' career-low round led the Mavericks to the best 18-hole team score in school history, a tally of 287, helping them finish at 876 for the tournament, 12 over par. The score put them 18th in the 20-team field and was yet another school record, breaking the old mark by five strokes.
Iowa State won the tournament, co-hosted by Denver and Northern Colorado, with a score of 823, outdistancing Kansas in second at 831. UMKC was third at 834.
Miles Russell was second for the Mavericks with a tally of 220. He finished the tournament with a card of 74 that put him in a tie with teammate
Cameron MacGregor at 73rd overall.
MacGregor, in just his second career tournament, took 10 strokes off his first career tournament score, thanks in part to a final round even-par card of 72. Both he and Russell finished four over par for the tournament.
Mitch Ryan and
Kevin Gordon tied for fourth on the team and 98th overall with matching scores of 226. Ryan finished with a final round of 74 while Gordon shot 73.
The Mavericks return to action at the UALR First Tee Classic in Little Rock, Ark. on Monday and Tuesday, March 28-29.
