NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – The Omaha men's golf team is in sixth place after the first two rounds of their own UNO Invitational on Monday at ArborLinks.
The Mavericks shot rounds of 303 and 299 for a 36-hole team score of 602. Iowa Western leads the 12-team field with a score of 574, good for a 12-stroke lead over Oral Roberts at 586. Indian Hills Community College is in third at 592. Fourteen strokes separate teams 3 through 9.
Mitch Ryan led the Mavericks' five scorers on the first day with rounds of 77 and even-par 72 for a total of 149. He is tied for 21st overall in the field of 75 golfers. In the second round, Ryan was one under at the turn and finished strong by draining an eight-footer for a birdie on the 18th.
Phillip Baumberger was second for the Mavs and tied for 33rd overall with a score of 151 that included rounds of 77 and 74. He began the second round with an eagle on the par-five first hole but just missed the even-par round with a double bogey at the last.
Miles Russell is third for the Mavericks and had a fast start, shooting an even-par round over the first 18 holes. He carded a score of 82 in round two and is tied with teammate
Kevin Gordon in 44th place with a total score of 154. Gordon, in his first collegiate tournament, shot rounds of 79 and 75.
Newcomer
Ben Maskus, a junior college transfer, completed the scoring for the Mavericks with rounds of 77 and 78 for a 36-hole score of 155 that has him in a tie for 49th place.
Two other UNO freshmen,
Sam Musch and
Kobi Boe, played as individuals. Musch actually had UNO's low score of the first day with rounds of 75 and 71 for a total of 146, good for a tie for 11th. Boe shot rounds of 81 and 85 for a score of 166, putting him in a tie for 72nd.
The final round begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
