Late Offensive Push Spurs IPFW Past Omaha, 10-6

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team dropped game two of its weekend series on Saturday, falling 10-6 to Fort Wayne at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 17-22 (10-10 Summit League), while the Mastodons improve to 23-16 (11-9 Summit League) with their six-game win streak intact.

IPFW starter Ryan Wells (4-5) earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six in 7.0 innings of work. Senior right-hander Zach Williamsen (6-5) took the loss, going 4.2 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Jake Weber picked up his ninth save of the year with two runs on one hit and a walk in 1.2 innings.

Three Mavericks had multi-hit efforts: senior Daniel Jewett (2-for-5, two RBI), junior Clayton Taylor (2-for-5, one run, two RBI) and redshirt freshman Ryan Cate (2-for-4, one run, one RBI). Junior Cole Gruber also had a hit and scored three times for the day.

Fort Wayne was led by Kendall Whitman, who went 4-for-6 and drove in four runs, as well as three hits apiece from Evan VanSumeren (3-for-5, four RBI) and Greg Kaiser (3-for-5, one run). Leadoff man Brandon Soat also reached base six times for the afternoon, finishing 2-for-2 with four walks and five runs scored.

After the Mastodons took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Omaha answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Gruber, who reached with a walk, was driven in with an RBI single up the middle by Cate to stall the game at 1-1.

IPFW broke through the tie in the third, when Soat drew his second straight walk and later scored on an RBI single to left by Whitman for a 2-1 ballgame.

The Mavericks struck back in the fourth, with Cate keying a leadoff single to left and later scoring on freshman Isaac Holt's RBI single to right center that tied the game again at 2-2.

Fort Wayne wasted no time and went ahead again in the fifth. Soat led off with a double to left center, advanced on a VanSumeren groundout and scored on an RBI groundout by Whitman that made it 3-2.

In the eighth, the Mastodons put up three runs on four hits. Shannon Baker walked, Jonathan Reece doubled to left and Soat walked to load the bases with two outs. VanSumeren then planted a three-run single in left center, clearing the bases and stretching IPFW's lead to 6-2.

UNO responded with a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning. Gruber and Taylor both singled to center and Cate walked to loaded the bases for Jewett, who laced a two-run single to left center that trimmed the score to 6-4.

IPFW exploded for four more runs in the top of the ninth, sparked by Reece's RBI single to center to drive in pinch runner Kaleb Zimmer. VanSumeren later drew a bases-loaded walk, and Whitman followed with a two-run double down the right field line, giving the Mastodons a 10-4 advantage. Omaha managed two last runs in the bottom of the ninth on a two-RBI single down the line by Taylor, which drove in Gruber and pinch-running junior Marcus Ethen for a final score of 10-6.

Omaha and Fort Wayne complete their series on Sunday, April 26 at the Ballpark at Boys Town, with first pitch at 1 p.m. Links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
