Mavs Fall 5-2 to IPFW Despite Fox's Career Day

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- Junior right-handed pitcher Tyler Fox dominated with a career-high 13 strikeouts on Friday, but it was not enough to carry the Omaha baseball team past Fort Wayne in a 5-2 loss at the Ballpark at Boys Town. The Mavericks are now 17-21 (10-9 Summit League), while the Mastodons improve to 22-16 (10-9 Summit League).

Fox settled for a no-decision in his 7.0-inning start, holding IPFW to one run on four hits and a walk with his career-best 13 Ks. It marked the most strikeouts by a Maverick hurler in UNO's four-year Division I era and was the highest single-game total since Joe Holtmeyer had 16 against Truman on March 22, 2010.

The win went to IPFW reliever Cody O'Neal (1-0), who held Omaha hitless and scoreless by striking out the side in the eighth inning. Junior left-hander Pete Macke (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks in the final inning while striking out one. Jake Weber picked up his eighth save of the year, allowing one baserunner on a walk with one strikeout in the ninth.

Senior Daniel Jewett and junior Collin Leif led the Mavericks at the plate with two hits apiece, with Jewett finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored and Leif going 2-for-3. Redshirt freshman Ryan Cate also crushed the first home run of his young career with a two-run shot to left in the fourth.

Fox mowed down Fort Wayne to start the game, retiring the Mastodons with five consecutive strikeouts and holding them hitless until the fourth. In the bottom half of the inning, Omaha finally got on the board with Cate's two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead.

IPFW then made it a one-run ballgame in the sixth, as Kendall Whitman dropped a two-run double into right field and immediately scored on Shane Trevino's RBI single up the middle.

The Mastodons were held to just one hit over the next two innings, but they did their damage in the ninth by taking advantage of a UNO error and scoring four runs on three hits. Greg Kaiser and Sean Herberger started it off with back-to-back singles, and a walk of Jon Timmermen loaded the bases with one out. With Omaha still clinging to a 2-1 lead, Macke fanned Jackson Boyce with a swinging strikeout, but Brandon Soat drew a walk in the next at-bat to bring Kaiser across and tie the game at 2-2. Evan VanSumeren then reached on a fielding error, and pinch runner Kaleb Zimmer scored to put the Mastodons ahead 3-2. Whitman followed with a two-run single to center that plated Soat and Timmermen, giving Fort Wayne a 5-2 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, freshman Cole Patterson worked a full-count walk with two outs, but Weber got out of it with a final strikeout to clinch the 5-2 win.

Omaha returns to action on Saturday, April 25, hosting Fort Wayne at the Ballpark at Boys Town at 1 p.m. Links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
