Box Score TULSA, Okla. -- It was a battle of the Summit League's top two baseball teams Friday night, as Omaha saw its six-game win streak snapped in a 2-0 loss to Oral Roberts at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Mavericks are now 13-9 (6-1 Summit League), while the Golden Eagles improve to 15-9 (6-1 Summit League).
The win went to Guillermo Trujillo (4-2), who threw 8.0 shutout innings with five hits and a walk allowed alongside nine strikeouts. Junior right-hander
Tyler Fox (3-2) took the loss after going 7.0 innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four. Anthony Sequeira earned his first save of the year, striking out one in the final two-thirds of an inning.
No Maverick registered more than one hit for the night, but senior
Daniel Jewett, juniors
Alex Schultz,
Cole Gruber and
Collin Leif and redshirt freshman
Tim Schaareman each registered a single.
Oral Roberts was led by Matt Brandy's 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
The Golden Eagles needed only one inning to generate their runs, plating two in the bottom of the fourth. Sequeira led off with a walk and Audie Afenir singled up the middle, with Sequeira heading to third on an error on a pickoff attempt. Derrian James then reached on a fielder's choice to score Sequeira, and ORU added another run with James coming in on Wilson's RBI single to center for a 2-0 lead.
Omaha threatened in the sixth with Leif and Schultz putting up back-to-back singles, but they were stranded as ORU got three quick outs. The Mavericks put one more runner on in the seventh when Jewett singled through the left side, but UNO was halted with a flyout and a groundout and was unable to get another runner aboard in the eighth and ninth innings.
UNO resumes the Oral Roberts series on Saturday, March 28, with first pitch at 2 p.m. at J.L. Johnson Stadium. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
