Box Score EMERSON, Ga. -- The Omaha baseball team closed out its neutral-site weekend series with Chicago State on Sunday, falling 6-4 at Perfect Game Park South at LakePoint. The Mavericks moved to 3-3 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Cougars improved to 1-5 (0-0 WAC).
Junior
Alex Schultz paced Omaha at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Juniors
Cole Gruber and
Clayton Taylor each tallied one hit and a run scored, and redshirt freshman
Ryan Cate scored twice and had an RBI for the day.
On the hill, the win went to Dillon Engle (1-0), who threw 5.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Junior
Gregg Gausden (1-1) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits and a walk with one K. Nick Kostalek earned his first save over the final 3.0 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Omaha jumped ahead in the top of the first inning, as Gruber led off the game with a double to left center and was plated with Cate's sacrifice fly to left for a 1-0 UNO lead.
Chicago State responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on two hits. Julian Russell and Evan Davis were hit by pitches to put two runners on, and a sacrifice fly to left by Chase Matheson drove in Russell to make it 1-1. CSU took the lead at 2-1 with Andy Gertonson's RBI double to right center that scored Davis. The Cougars then added two more runs on two hits in the third. With two outs, Jordan Stroschein singled to drive in Gertonson and Matheson, extending Chicago State's lead to 4-1.
UNO pulled within one at 4-3 in the top of the sixth, notching a pair of runs with two hits. With one down, the Mavericks loaded the bases for Schultz, who laced a two-run single to left to score Cate and Taylor.
CSU came back for another run in the seventh, as Davis came across on Matheson's two-out RBI infield single and pushed it to 5-3. Omaha managed one more score in the eighth as a
Justin Threlkeld single to left drove in Cate to cut it to 5-4. Chicago State, however, added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame, with Russell's sacrifice fly to right scoring Chris Hipchen for a final tally of 6-4.
