OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team dropped their first home match of the 2015 season to North Dakota, 5-2. Omaha is now 3-6 on the season, while UND improves to 3-3.
North Dakota won two of the three doubles matches to go up, 1-0. Ignace Warson and Lukas Vanzura lost a close match to Matt Fuka and Hunter Oothoudt at No. 3 doubles, 8-4. The Mavericks evened things up at No. 1 doubles as Nathan Greteman and Colin Buckley defeated Connor Oberle and Dave Bergstrom, 8-4.
The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles. Marko Minic and John Ellis gave Dusty Britton and Simon Danyluk all they could handle before falling, 8-7 (7-5).
“We were evenly matched with North Dakota in all three doubles matches,” commented head coach Tyson Thomas. “It came down to a few crucial points at number two doubles that happened to break for UND tonight.”
North Dakota won four of the six singles matches. Warson played a tough first set at No. 4 singles against Joe Lee before dropping the match, 7-5, 6-0. North Dakota went up 3-0 with a split set victory at No. 6 singles as Vanzura fell to Ty Misialek, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
Greteman got Omaha on the board with a straight set win over Danyluk at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-5. Minic won in straight sets over Bergstrom at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-0.
Buckley lost a hard fought match against Britton at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5. In the final match of the night, Ellis lost a close split set match against Oberle at No. 2 singles, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.
“We will use tonight as a learning experience,” commented Thomas. “We are learning how to compete at a higher level and we will definitely take a lot from this match and use it as we build for the future.”
Omaha will return to action on Tuesday, March 3 against Creighton University at Hanscom Tennis Center. Start time against the Bluejays is set for noon.
