Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Omaha baseball team continued its weekend at the GCU Classic on Saturday night, falling 8-1 to host Grand Canyon at Brazell Stadium. The Mavericks are now 0-2 (0-0 Summit League) on the year, while the Antelopes improve to 2-0 (0-0 WAC).
All-WAC pitcher Coley Bruns (1-0) earned the win for GCU by tossing 6.0 scoreless innings while allowing three singles with three walks and striking out four. Senior right-handed pitcher
Zach Williamsen (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk.
No Maverick registered more than one hit for the day, but freshman
Adam Caniglia, making his debut as a pinch hitter, was 1-for-1 at the plate with one run scored and a walk drawn. Junior
Clayton Taylor had Omaha's only RBI of the game.
Grand Canyon was led by Brandon Smith, Charles Wagner and David Walker, who all finished 2-for-4. Smith also had three RBI and a run scored, while Wagner and Chad De La Guerra each drove in two more runs for the Antelopes.
GCU piled on its offense early, scoring one run in the second inning and four more in the third. The Antelopes added two more in the fifth, sparked by De La Guerra's solo leadoff homer, to take a 7-0 lead.
Omaha tallied its only run of the night in the top of the seventh, with Caniglia leading off the inning with an infield single and later scoring on Taylor's RBI single to make it 7-1.
Grand Canyon answered with a final run in the bottom half of the inning, bringing the final score to 8-1.
Omaha returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 15, taking on North Dakota State in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CT) at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz., and a link to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
