The Mavericks surged early in the game, taking a 21-7 lead on a
Tim Smallwood layup. UNO went up by 14 again with a Patterson trey that pushed it to 24-10, but South Dakota came back immediately with a 10-0 run spurred by seven points from Burnette. With 3:13 until halftime, a Burnette jumper brought the Coyotes within one, and they took their first lead at 32-31 with 2:12 on a Larson bucket. Omaha regained its lead with 0:35 to go as Carter fed Thurman for a two-handed dunk, which made it 34-33 at the break.
In the second half, South Dakota turned to Harris, who scored all 12 of his points in the final minutes, and Larson, who had 11, to spark a comeback. The Coyotes tied the game at 50-50 with back-to-back triples by the USD duo, but the Mavericks surged again and rattled off 11 unanswered points for a 61-50 lead with 9:01 to go.
USD stalled the game once more at 67-all with a Larson layup at 3:38, and after tying again at 69-all, the Coyotes used a Norris free throw to go up by one. Thurman then registered a tip-in and a dunk to spot Omaha a 73-70 advantage at 1:14, but a Brandon Bos jumper with just under a minute to go pulled USD within one. Eric Robertson nailed USD's final shot, as his tip-in with 0:08 left gave the Coyotes the lead. The Mavericks were left with one final chance, but two shot attempts in the final possession fell just short as South Dakota escaped with the 74-73 win.
