OGDEN, Utah – The Omaha men's tennis team lost to Weber State on Saturday afternoon in Ogden, Utah, 7-0. The Mavericks are now 1-4 on the season, while the Wildcats are 2-4 overall.
“We have had some tough matches to start the year,” commented head coach Tyson Thomas. “This is a learning period and we know that it's going to pay off later in the season.”
Omaha dropped the first point of the evening in doubles. The team of Ignace Warson and Erik Anderson lost to Landon Barlow and Sanjay Goswami at number two doubles, 6-2. At number one doubles, Colin Buckley and Nathan Greteman were nipped by Stefan Cooper and Todd Fought, 6-4. John Ellis and Marko Minic dropped a 6-2 decision to Dyan Hansel and Scott Hintz at number three doubles.
In singles action, Goswami defeated James McManus at number four, 6-0, 6-1. Anderson was swept by Fought at number two singles, 6-0, 6-0. Ellis had a solid match against Barlow at number three singles, but lost 6-2, 6-1. At number one singles, Buckley gave Copper all he could handle before falling, 7-5, 6-3. Hintze topped Warson at number six singles, 6-1, 6-2. Weber State's Hansel narrowly escaped Minic at number five singles, 6-4, 7-5.
Coach Thomas was impressed with his team's effort against Weber State. Thomas applauded the effort of number one singles player Colin Buckley. “I am really proud of how Colin (Buckley) played today,” said Thomas. “He played a very talented opponent and was right with him in every game.”
Omaha opens Summit League play at home on Friday, Feb. 6 against Western Illinois. Start time at Miracle Hill Tennis Center is set for 1:00 p.m.
