The Mavericks came out hot to start the match, hitting .464 in the opening set while holding the Leathernecks to a .095 effort. O'Shaughnessy had 11 assists in guiding the offense in the first game, and Wollak tallied seven kills on .700 hitting with no errors. Early on, UNO ran out to a 10-3 lead with the help of two straight WIU errors, forcing a timeout. The lead was stretched to 21-12, and back-to-back Wollak kills maintained a double-digit advantage at 23-13. Western managed one more kill from Peyton Crosser before kills by O'Shaughnessy and Wollak closed the set at 25-14.

The second game proved far closer, as the score tied 14 times. Omaha was poised for a win at 24-22 after a Banderas kill, but two Maverick errors evened the score at 24-all. The score stalled again at 25-25 and 26-26, but Western put it away with a Crosser kill and a block from Mallory Gibson and Melanie Miller to even the match at 1-1.

In game three, Western Illinois went up 13-11 before Omaha broke it open with a 5-0 run. Senior Jessy Schroedter put down a kill and junior defensive specialist Kimberly Bailey had an ace, setting the stage for three more consecutive kills from Schmale and O'Shaughnessy to spur a Leatherneck timeout. WIU then rallied with a 5-0 run of its own, going ahead 18-16 and forcing an Omaha timeout. The Mavericks managed to tie it at 21-21 with the help of a Schmale kill, a Leatherneck setting error and a kill from Banderas. UNO and WIU knotted the score again at 22-22, 23-23 and 24-24, but the Mavericks held strong to force two Western attack errors. On the final error, a block from Schroedter and Schmale put it away with a 26-24 win.

Western Illinois led in nearly all of the fourth game, but UNO surged ahead late with an efficient 6-0 run. Down 20-16, Wollak and junior Michaela Schimmer posted kills and O'Shaughnessy had a service ace, followed by three straight Leatherneck errors to make it 22-20. Western then got it back to a one-point margin, but Wollak's kill and a WIU attack error pushed it to 24-21. Ann Miller had one more kill for the Leathernecks, but a final kill from Schimmer closed the day for the Mavericks, who took a 25-22 set win and the match, 3-1.

"This was a solid performance today on a tough road trip for our team," head coach Rose Shires said. "We are very excited to gain our first conference victory and with the way our team has performed to start the league portion of our schedule. We need to continue to grind, as this first week of conference play will continue right away on Tuesday night."

Omaha returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 30, hosting South Dakota at Sapp Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. Links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
