OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha men's tennis team fell to Abilene Christian in the 2014 National Invitational Tennis Tournament opening match, 6-1 at the Koch Family Tennis Center Friday night.
The loss drops the Mavericks to 6-16 overall while the visting Wildcats improve to 15-10.
Omaha won two of the three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point, before Abilene Christian swept the six singles matches for the 6-1 win. In No. 1 doubles, Eric McKnight and Adam Dockery defeated Borja Cortés and Jason Proctor, 8-4 while Tyler Mercier and Nathan Greteman won over Nico Agritelley and Guilherme Gesser, 8-4. Colin Buckley and Erik Anderson fell to Nicklas Wingord and Marco Bensley, 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles match.
Singles play saw Mercier prove to be the toughest match for the Wildcats, as the Bennington, Neb. native fell to Cortés, 6-3, 6-7, 14-12. Abilene Christian won the other five matches in straight sets.
Omaha will be back in action tomorrow to play a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. at the Koch Family Tennis Center. The Mavericks will square off against Grand Canyon in the morning before playing NJIT at 3 p.m.
