Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. – Omaha had it tied at 86-86 in the closing seconds but was unable to come away with the win over South Dakota, falling 87-86 on Thursday night at the DakotaDome. With the loss, the Mavericks are 15-12 (4-7 Summit League), while the Coyotes improve to 11-15 (5-6 Summit League).
Junior forward
Mike Rostampour had a stellar night, securing his second career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The West St. Paul, Minn., native shot 5-of-7 from the field and 7-of-9 from the line while also snagging a pair of steals.
Junior guard
CJ Carter finished with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting with a trio of threes. Sophomore guard
Marcus Tyus added 12 points, and sophomore guard
Devin Patterson rounded it out with 10 points, five assists and three steals.
As a team, Omaha shot 42 percent (27-of-65) from the floor, 29 percent (7-of-24) from long range and 78 percent (25-of-32) at the line. South Dakota finished at 54 percent (30-of-56), 64 percent (9-of-14) from beyond the arc and 72 percent (18-of-25) at the charity stripe. The Coyotes outrebounded UNO, 36-33.
South Dakota was led by 21 points from Tyler Flack, who shot 7-of-10 from the floor and 6-of-r7 at the line. Adam Thoseby (16), Casey Kasperbauer (14) and Brandon Bos (12) also scored in double figures off the bench, and Bos pulled down a team-leading seven boards.
Carter got out to a hot start in the first seven minutes, scoring all 11 of his first-half points. Facing a 10-point deficit, the Mavericks got within five with the help of a Rostampour three. Tyus then went on a tear of his own, scoring all seven of his first-half points in a 90-second spurt to make it 32-27. Rostampour, who had 11 in the opening 20 minutes, scored six in the final three minutes, and Omaha trailed 38-35 at the break.
In the second half, back-to-back dunks from senior guard
Justin Simmons pulled Omaha within one again at 60-59 with 9:10 to go. The Coyotes, however, went on to lead by as much as nine from there, going up 70-61 at 6:31 and 72-63 at 5:04.
Trailing by six with 2:34 left, Patterson hit two free throws to get UNO within four, 80-76. Two more Patterson foul shots made it 80-78, but South Dakota responded with a Bos jumper and a free throw from Flack. Patterson then went to the line again after a foul from Trey Norris, making both shots to get it to 83-80. A Flack layup again pushed USD up by five, but senior guard
Caleb Steffensmeier knocked down a 3-pointer with 0:33 to go, pulling Omaha within two. After a single free throw from Bos left it at 86-83, Steffensmeier again swooped in for the Mavericks, hitting his second three to tie it at 86-86 with 0:19 left to play. With 1.5 seconds left on the clock, though, Tyus was whistled for a foul on Norris, who made his first of two free throw attempts, good enough to give South Dakota the 87-86 win.
Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, traveling to Denver for the Mavericks' final road game of the season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CT) at Magness Arena, and the game will be televised locally on ROOT Sports. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
