Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team put together a solid performance on Friday night, defeating Western Illinois 3-0 (9-25, 20-25, 22-25) at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the win, the Mavericks closed the regular season with a record of 11-18 (6-10 Summit League), while the Leathernecks dropped to 5-22 (3-11 Summit League).

Freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey paced UNO with a season-high 15 kills on .324 hitting along with five digs. Freshman setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy notched her team-leading 17th double-double of the season with 30 assists and 13 digs. The Omaha Marian graduate added four assists, four service aces and a block.

Junior outside hitter Kelley Wollak narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 12 digs. Junior libero Kimberly Bailey and freshman defensive specialist Marisa Moseman also had double-figure dig efforts, finishing with 10 and 13, respectively. Moseman's 13 digs tied her season best.

Senior middle blocker Jessy Schroedter and junior middle blocker Amy Taylor also chipped in six kills apiece, with Schroedter hitting .500 for the night. The match marked the final career match of Schroedter and her fellow senior, defensive specialist Rachelle Kruml.

Western Illinois was led by eight kills from Mallory Gibson. Samantha Fournier had 16 assists and 12 digs for a double-double, and Molly Murphy added another 10 digs. Melanie Miller led the way at the net, totaling a match-high three blocks.

The Mavericks outhit WIU, .275 to .093, and outdug the Leathernecks, 57-49. Western won the blocking battle, 5-2.

Omaha dominated in the opening set, hitting .370 as a team. A balanced offensive attack saw six different Mavericks register kills, led by four from Wollak. UNO never trailed in the game, doubling up WIU at 10-5. The lead was extended to 14-6 on a Wollak kill, followed by an 11-3 closing run for a 25-9 win. Western's nine points were the lowest scoring total in a single set this season by any Maverick opponent.

In the second game, Omaha's attacking corps stepped up again with a .375 hitting percentage. The kills were spread out among six Mavs again, this time led by Horkey, as the freshman registered seven kills on .538 hitting with no errors. UNO took a quick 4-0 lead with the help of an O'Shaughnessy ace and kills by Taylor and Horkey, prompting a WIU timeout. The Mavericks never relinquished their lead, surging ahead by six by 14-8 on three straight kills from Wollak, Horkey and junior middle blocker Megan Schmale. Later, leading still at 21-16, the Leathernecks pulled within three on three consecutive scores from Gibson and Peyton Crosser. Following a Maverick timeout, Omaha regained control with kills from Schmale and Horkey to make it 23-18. Schmale tacked on one more kill late in the set to push it to set point, and two plays later, a WIU error gave UNO the 25-20 win and a two-game advantage.

Horkey led the Mavericks in the third set, finishing with six of the team's 12 kills. The game was more closely contested than the first two, as Western led early until Omaha tied it at 11-11 on a Horkey kill. After reaching a 13-13 tie, Omaha strung together a 6-0 run capped with another Horkey kill at 19-14. The Leathernecks battled back to tie the game again at 20-20, but Omaha outscored WIU 5-2 on the final seven plays and used a pair of kills by Wollak and Horkey to finish it off. The Mavericks won the set, 25-22, and earned the 3-0 sweep to close the 2014 league slate.

Omaha returns to action next weekend at the GCU Invitational postseason tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. The Mavericks face NJIT and UMass Lowell on Friday, Nov. 21, followed by Incarnate Word and host Grand Canyon on Saturday, Nov. 22.
