OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska Omaha men's soccer program and Head Coach
Jason Mims have announced the addition of 10 new players to the 2013 squad.
Three local prospects and seven from out of state comprise the Mavericks' signing class. Two enrolled at UNO in January and trained with the Mavs in the spring.
"We're very excited about our 2013 class," Mims said. "All of these players are individuals who we believe can help us continue to make positive strides toward building a winning program. We have a great variety of talented players joining the team in the fall who will help us in our third year as a program and second year in The Summit League."
The Mavericks signed Creighton Prep senior forward Mark Moulton Jr., who was named the NSCAA 2012 Nebraska High School Player of the Year and
Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska team captain following his junior season in 2012, in which he led the Junior Jays to the Class A state championship for the second straight year. Moulton was the second-leading scorer in Class A in 2012 with 18 goals and 15 assists, and he scored a goal in both of the Junior Jays' state title games in 2011 and 2012. In his senior season in 2013, Moulton has been dominant, putting up 25 goals and 16 assists entering the state tournament to lead the state in scoring. Moulton plays club soccer for the four-time state champion Omaha FC Elite 1.
The other local prospects are club teammates for Nebraska Futbol Club. Jake McCain graduated a semester early from Papillion-La Vista South High School, skipping his senior season to enroll at UNO in January. McCain was an all-state midfielder for the Titans with six goals and five assists as a junior in 2012, leading the Titans to the Class A state semifinals in his only season of high school soccer.
McCain's club teammate, fellow midfielder Eduardo "Lalo" Gamboa, will join the Mavericks after his senior season at South Sioux City High School this spring. Lalo Gamboa put together an impressive junior season last year, leading the Cardinals to the Class B state championship game with a final record of 19-2. He was an all-state selection as a center midfielder.
In addition to the three local newcomers, seven prospects from out of state will wear the Maverick jersey in the fall. Along with McCain, Fargo, N.D., midfielder Jacob Weiler also enrolled at UNO this semester and trained with the Mavs this spring. Weiler was a first-team all-state selection as a junior and senior at Fargo South High School under coach Dean Hashbarger and was named Gatorade Player of the Year in North Dakota as a junior and the Powerade Senior Athlete of the Year in 2012. He led the Bruins to the 2009 state championship, and he was a three-time club state champion as well.
Christian Garcia comes to UNO from Bel Air High School in El Paso, Texas, the same high school current Maverick
Jesus Perez attended. A 5-4 forward, Garcia scored 20 goals and was named first-team all-district and all-city as a junior, helping the Highlanders reach the Elite 8 of the Texas 5A state tournament. Garcia also won two State Cups with his club team, Mexicas FC.
Conor Corboy, from Aptos, Calif., played in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) with the Santa Cruz Breakers under coach Efrain Burgos. Langston was a member of Eastlake High School's Class 4A state championship team in 2011 before focusing strictly on the USSDA as a junior and senior.
Anders Moeller will join the Mavs as a junior after playing two years at Western Texas College. A native of Denmark, Moeller helped lead the Westerners to a regional championship and played on the back line for the 10th-ranked team in the NJCAA. The Westerners reached the final eight in the NJCAA national tournament. Moeller had three goals and seven assists as a freshman and notched a goal and two assists as a sophomore. Moeller played his youth soccer for Danish side Lyngby Boldklub.
UNO will also have two goalkeepers join the fray this fall in Sean Clancy and Joseph Ghitis.
