GREELEY, Colo. - The UNO women's soccer team capped its two-game road trip with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at Northern Colorado on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 2-1 with 10 seconds left in the match, UNO's
Hannah Wampler broke free behind the defense and scored on a breakaway, but was whistled offsides, ending the threat of the Mavericks tying the game in the final seconds. UNO dropped to 0-5 on the season, while the Bears improved to 2-2-1 with the win.
Northern Colorado's Brittany Dunn scored an unassisted goal in the middle of the box at the 15:00 mark to take a 1-0 lead, the fifth time the Mavs have given up the first goal this year. UNO was unlucky not to be leading though after hitting the post in the third minute.
The Mavs fought back to tie the match in the 35th minute, as
Anna Sibson found
Danielle Archuleta behind the defense for a breakaway goal, the senior's second goal in as many games.
The Bears came out quickly after halftime though to reclaim the lead for good just two minutes in when Rebecca Lancia scored off of an assist from Adrienne Jordan.
UNO goalie
Meaghan Clark did all she could to keep the Mavs within striking distance, making a career-high nine saves, many of the acrobatic variety. Northern Colorado outshot UNO 20-4 with an 11-2 edge in shots on goal.
UNO hosts Creighton on Friday at the UNO Soccer Field at 5:30 p.m.
