BOISE, Idaho - A 77th minute goal was the difference in a 2-1 win for Portland State over the UNO women's soccer team in the Mavs' final game at the Soccer Etc./Nike Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Portland State (2-5-1) claimed a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Daniela Solis scored off an assist from Megan Martin. Martin played in a cross from the left side, and Solis finished from seven yards.
The Mavericks (0-9) battled back to tie the game when
Melanie McCormick scored her first goal of the season after an assist from
Katlyn Nimtz at 56:34. Nimtz's initial shot was saved by the Vikings' goalkeeper, but McCormick jumped on the rebound and scored from eight yards out. Nimtz was playing her second game since missing four games with an injury.
Just as it looked like the Mavs might take an opponent to overtime for the first time this season, Martin scored from 10 yards out on the left side of the box at 76:14 off of an assist from Melissa Bishop.
The Mavs fought hard to tie the game late with two late shots, but
Kerry Pivovar's attempt at 88:49 went wide left, and
Layla Ashouri sent a free kick at 88:53 over the crossbar.
Portland State finished with a 22-9 edge in shots and an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Meaghan Clark made nine saves for UNO.
Hannah Wampler had two shots on goal.
The Mavs will host Oral Roberts on Friday at 4 p.m. at the UNO Soccer Field in their final non-conference game of the season.
