MACOMB, Ill. - The UNO men's tennis team earned its first-ever win over a Division I opponent on Monday, knocking off future Summit League foe Western Illinois, 4-3.
The Mavs were 0-3 against Division I foes this year before Monday's historic win. The win was also the Maverick men's first over a Division I opponent in the four-year history of the program. UNO is now 6-9 on the season with four matches remaining this week. Western Illinois dropped to 4-13.
The teams split the singles matches 3-3.
Connor Larson beat Jim Capalbo, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles,
Ben Williams beat Daniel Sweeney, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5, and
Nathan Greteman won at No. 6 over Jesus Roman, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Mavericks won two of three matches to take the decisive doubles point. Larson and
Anthony Forcucci teamed up at No. 2 to defeat Capalbo and Andrew Yopp, 8-3. Greteman and Williams earned an 8-3 win over Sweeney and Roman at No. 3 doubles.
The Mavericks will play two matches on Tuesday, starting at 9 a.m. at Bradley and ending at 4 p.m. at Lindenwood (Mo.).
