AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UNO baseball team opened its run at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Tuesday night, falling 8-3 to Army at Lake Myrtle Park. With the loss, the Mavericks dropped to 3-14 on the year, while the Black Knights improved to 9-4.
Despite getting off to a hot start, the Mavs were unable to regain momentum against Army starter Alex Robinett's career effort. The freshman fanned a career-high 11 batters with no walks over seven innings to earn his first career win. Robinett (1-1) restricted UNO to six total hits and just three singles after the first inning.
Senior
Brandon Winkelmann (1-1) took the loss in relief, surrendering six runs – five of which were earned – off five hits. Winkelmann struck out two and walked three over 1.2 innings of work.
UNO starter
Andrew Reck went a season-long 5.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Reck collected a career-high-tying six strikeouts and issuing two walks.
Sophomore
Caleb Palensky was the only Maverick to tally multiple hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior
Mark Waldron scored once and drove in two more runs, while senior
Cory Buckley accounted for the Mavs' other RBI.
Army was led by Cody Murtle's 3-for-4 performance at the plate, in addition to three RBI and one run scored. Daniel Cortes went 1-for-3, drew two walks and added two runs driven in.
UNO took a promising 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs off three hits and an Army error. Senior
Brady Hohl reached base by way of a fielding error, then advanced to third on senior
Colby McCord's single to right. Waldron later ripped a two-run double down the right field line, bringing in both runners. Buckley followed up with an RBI single through the right side that scored Waldron and gave the Mavs the early 3-0 lead.
The Black Knights made it 3-1 in the second, but Reck kept them hitless for the remaining three innings of his outing. That held until the sixth, when Army brought the game within one. Zach Price was plunked with a pitch and later came in on Mark McCants' sacrifice fly.
Army then took the lead in the seventh by plating three runs on three hits. Price singled up the middle to score Murtle, and Cortes' two-run single to the same place put the Black Knights up 5-3. They extended their lead another three-inning frame in the eighth, which, combined with work of the Army bullpen, sealed the final score at 8-3.
UNO returns to action on Wednesday, March 14, facing Chicago State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (CT) at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla. Live stats will not be available for the game, but live audio will be linked on OMavs.com.
