Mavs Fall 4-3 to Future Foe SDSU

OMAHA, NEB. –
The UNO women's tennis team had its first taste of future Summit League competition Friday night, falling 4-3 to South Dakota State at Hanscom Tennis Center.
 
In doubles action, senior Kelsie Olson and freshman Alex Tran dropped the match 8-5 to Jenny Blackburne and Brooke Henry at No. 1. Freshmen Rachel Pierson and Jacqueline Baude also lost a long match with a score of 9-8 (4) to Bryna Nasenbeny and Megan McDougall in the No. 2 spot. In the last doubles match at No. 3, junior Lindsay Weideman and senior Heather Hottman dropped the set 8-4 to Anna Botzet and Bethany Goeden, giving South Dakota State the doubles point.
 
Both squads came out on fire in singles action, splitting all the way to the last match before the Jackrabbits edged the Mavericks in the final set. At No. 1, Tran topped Nasenbeny in an exciting third set, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Olson continued strong at the No. 2 spot before falling 3-6, 3-6 to Blackburne, while Weideman posted an impressive win of 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 over Henry.
 
Pierson pulled away with two games against McDougall in the No. 4 slot before falling 2-6, 0-6. Baude competed at the net, finishing the win 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 to Natalia Medina.

The deciding factor came down to the marathon match of the night. Senior Caitlin Christy and SDSU's Botzet battled back and forth, taking two sets to tie-breakers before Christy eventually dropped the final set to bring the final score to 6-7 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4).
 
The Mavs return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 22, hosting Arkansas-Little Rock The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start at Hanscom Tennis Center.
