BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Omaha men's basketball team closed its first weekend of conference play Saturday evening, falling 78-63 to defending league champion South Dakota State at Frost Arena. The Mavericks are now 2-7 (0-2 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits improve to 6-2 (1-0 Summit League).
Junior center
John Karhoff led the Mavs with 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the floor, as well as three rebounds and two assists for the night.

Justin Simmons and sophomore guard
CJ Carter matched each other with 10 points. Carter put up a pair of 3-pointers, along with two boards, two steals and an assist.
Junior forward
Matt Hagerbaumer pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds with five points, an assist and two blocks, and freshman guard
Marcus Tyus added seven boards to his credit.
South Dakota State had four double-figure scorers, paced by Jordan Dykstra's 17 points, three rebounds and three assists. Tony Fiegen was close behind with 16 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double. Nate Wolters and Brayden Carlson added 13 points apiece, with Wolters tacking on four boards, three steals and five assists.
As a team, Omaha outshot SDSU 48.1 percent (25-of-52) to 47.8 percent (32-of67) from the floor, as well as 38 percent (6-of-16) from beyond the arc to the Jacks' 32 percent (8-of-25).
SDSU forced 13 Maverick turnovers in the first half, turning them into 23 points. Dykstra and Fiegen both fired on all cylinders, as Dykstra posted 15 first-half points with perfect 3-for-3 shooting from long range, and Fiegen added 12. As a team, the Jackrabbits shot 56 percent for the first stanza with six treys, while UNO shot at a 48 percent clip from the floor with a pair of threes. Karhoff led all Maverick scorers in the first half with 10 points off 5-for-6 shooting, along with three rebounds and two assists.
In the second half, the Mavericks made a 10-point run to cut it to a 13-point margin at 68-55, courtesy of threes from Carter and Simmons, another bucket from Tyus and a dunk from Hagerbaumer. Despite the rally, the deficit proved too much to overcome, as South Dakota State took the win, 78-63.
Omaha returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 4, traveling to Wisconsin. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.
