OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's soccer team dominated play against North Dakota State but couldn't find the net, falling 1-0 Sunday afternoon in its season finale at the UNO Soccer Field.
The Mavs ended the season with a 3-15 overall record and a 3-5 record in their first year in The Summit League. NDSU improved to 8-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The win assured the Bison a spot in The Summit League Championship.
Neither team was able to gain an upper hand in the first half. The Mavericks controlled play and outshot the Bison 4-0, all of which were on frame.
The Mavs continued to dominate in the second half, registering the first nine shots of the game with five more to open the second half. But North Dakota State took its first quality chance well, as Jenna Miller finished off a centering pass from Anisha Kinnarath for a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute. It was Miller's first goal of the season.
The Mavs came as close as possible to tying the game in the 83rd minute.
Logen Watts took a shot from 25 yards out in the center of the pitch, and goalie Sierra Bonham had to lunge backward to deflect the ball off the crossbar and safely out of play.
The crossbar continued to haunt Omaha in the 88th minute, as
Morgan Westenburg shot from 20 yards out off the bar. The Mavs were unable to beat Bonham, who made nine saves in the victory.
UNO finished with a 15-2 shot advantage and a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. But the Bison put home their one attempt on goal to claim the shutout win.
Senior
Danielle Archuleta capped her career on Senior Day with one shot on goal. Archuleta finished the season with a team-high 12 points on five goals and two assists.
