Maverick Cross Country Finishes Season With a Vict

HARRISBURG, S.D.—UNO cross country etched their name at the top of the standings at the University of Sioux Falls Invite on Saturday. The Mavericks finished the season strongly by winning their final two races. Their previous team victory was at the Yellowjacket Classic at Graceland on Oct. 22nd. The Mavericks earned 53  points as a team, with junior Amanda Vorthmann winning her second straight race.

Vorthmann's second individual title this season came in a time of 18:16. Vorthmann was followed once again by Kristin Rogers, this race the freshman finished in ninth place with a time of 19:28. The third and fourth place team spots go to the Maverick duo of Nicole Behm and Mikayla Peck. Behm, a junior, finished the Sioux Falls Invite in 14th place with a time of 20:05. Meanwhile Peck, a freshman, finished behind Behm in the 15th spot, earning a 20:16 finish. The final scored spot for the Mavericks went to sophomore Kayla Fenske, who finished in a time of 20:56, earning the 22nd spot overall.

The Mavericks sent eight runners to finish the season in South Dakota. The final three Mavericks to cross the finish line were freshman Ashley Kildow, junior Brittany Phillips and senior Katie Becker. Kildow finished her first season as a Maverick in 24th place, earning a final time of 21:02, while Phillips' time of 21:35 landed her in the 31st spot. The lone senior, and former swimming and diving team member, Katie Becker finished her first cross country season in 41st place, finishing in a time of 23:06.

The Mavericks finished their second straight meet in first place to wrap-up the 2011 season. The cross country team from Black Hills State tied UNO for first point-wise, but were edged out by UNO in a dual tiebreaker. This tiebreaker involves matching the first runners' times against each other, the team's second runners' times against each, etc. UNO won three of the five matchups, resulting in a Maverick victory. Six teams competed in Sioux Falls on Saturday with the host team finishing in the third spot with 67 team points. Minot State, Lindenwood, and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology rounded out the standings, earning 74, 119 and134 points respectively.

This was the final race for the UNO cross country team in the 2011 season. Next year the young team will compete in the NCAA Division I Summit League.
