MCCOOK LAKE, S.D.--It was a day of season bests for the UNO cross country team at the Briar Cliff Invite. All 10 Mavericks ran their top times over 5K to earn sixth place on Saturday.
The Mavericks earned 138 points. Augustana finished first with a team score of 65 points. Morningside placed second with 77 points followed by Dordt College with 90 points. Rounding out the top five teams were Northwestern (Iowa) and Doane College. The Red Raiders of Northwestern earned 117 team points, and Doane finished the race with 124 team points.
Junior Amanda Vorthmann led the Mavs with her fourth-place finish. This was the third consecutive race in which she finished at the top for UNO, as well as her highest individual place. Vorthmann finished with a time of 18:06. Freshman Kristin Rogers finished in second place for the Mavs, 19th overall, with a time of 18:59. Earning the third slot for Mavs was Mikayla Peck. Peck, a freshman, finished 37th overall with a time of 19:31. Finishing fourth at McCook Lake was junior Nicole Behm. She came in at 19:56 to finish 47th overall. Following Behm to round out the top five for the Mavericks was freshman runner Lydia Martin who finished the race 52nd overall with a time of 20:04.
Ten runners competed on Saturday at the Briar Cliff Invite for UNO. Junior Brittany Phillips earned sixth on the Mavericks team, 53rd overall, with a time of 20:04. The seventh runner for the Mavs was Ashley Kildow. She ran a time of 20:16, good for 59th overall. The eighth, ninth and tenth runners for the Mavericks were Kayla Fenske, Katie Becker and Kelsey Green. Fenske finished 63rd overall with a time of 20:29. With a time of 22:08, Becker was 110th overall at 22:08 and Kelsey Green was 111th overall with a time of 22:12.
The UNO cross country team will next be in action at 10 a.m. on October 15th at the Tim Young Dakota Days Challenge in Vermillion, S.D.
