Kearney, Neb. - The Maverick's revenge bid against the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney fell short this afternoon at Harvey Park as they lost to UNK, 8-1. The match is the first of three in two days for the men's tennis team as they will have little rest due to an early scheduled start tomorrow. UNO's record drops to 4-3 overall after the loss, while Nebraska-Kearney's improves to 8-4.
In Thursday's doubles competition, the No. 1 doubles team consisting of
Chase Petersen and
Drew Mercier failed in their attempt to defeat Josh Steinke and Josh Raymond of Kearney, 8-3. The loss sees the pairing fall to 5-2 overall. However, the Mavs fought back in No. 2 doubles as
Eric McKnight and
Jon McQuistan won in a close battle, 8-6.
UNO did not see any success in the singles competition either as they were swept. No. 1 singles saw one of the closest duals of the afternoon as
Drew Mercier was defeated by UNK's Josh Raymond, 4-6, 6-2 (10-5). Other close ones included No. 5 and No. 6 singles, where both
Jon McQuistan and
Andrew Lescelius fell in the third set.
The Mavs continue play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. as they are scheduled to take on Metro State College of Denver. The second match will see the Mavericks take on Mesa State College at 1 p.m. before they head to Southwest Baptist in MIAA action next weekend.
