Kristin Wellwood hit a two-run home run in the third inning and then the Mavericks scored seven runs in the fourth to lead a 9-1 win Friday in five innings against Oklahoma Panhandle State. The win came in UNO's opening day at the Pittsburg State/Missouri Southern State Crossover Invite.
Nebraska-Omaha's games Saturday have been postponed to Sunday and Sunday's originally scheduled games have been canceled. The Mavericks will play Washburn at 9 a.m. Sunday and then Drury at 1 p.m. to conclude weekend action.
Wellwood went 2-for-3, drove in three and scored twice. The homer was her second of the season after hitting just one last year.
The first two Mavericks reached safely in the fourth inning and then
Julia Krejci moved them each over a base with a sacrifice bunt.
Amanda Bader then drove them in with a single. Wellwood and
Treightin Yates also had RBI hits in the inning and the Mavericks took advantage of three OPSU errors and two walks.
Panhandle State scored first in the opening inning with an RBI single but UNO pitcher
Beth Haley allowed just two hits the rest of the way as she improved to 3-0. She struck out seven and walked two.
