VERMILLION, S.D. – The UNO swimming and diving team closed out the regular season with a 161-131 win over South Dakota on Saturday at Dakota Dome pool. The Mavericks earned first-place finishes in 12 of 16 events to earn their second win over the Coyotes this season.
The Mavs won the first six events in the meet, starting with a victory in the 200 meter medley relay. The team of #Kristy Gmeiner#, #Laura Kemp#, #Jessica LaFave and Cait Hopkins# finished in a time of 2:05.08, just .01 ahead of South Dakota.
#Lindsey Kline# took the top spot in the 800 meter freestyle. She posted a time of 9:27.57, more than 5 seconds faster than USD's Sara Holman. UNO's #Tessa Edwards# was fourth at 9:55.66.
Hopkins grabbed to honors in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:11.78. Kemp came in third at 2:12.64.
UNO had three of the top four spots in the next event, the 100 meter backstroke. Gmeiner won in 1:08.93. Teammates #Amy Bechdolt and Liz McCain# were second and fourth respectively with times of 1:09.94 and 1:13.02.
In the 100 meter breaststroke, #Carrie Murphy# finished first for UNO in 1:18.46. She edged out USD's Kayla Smith and Shannon Moceri in a tight race. The pair trailed Murphy by a collective time of .36 seconds. The Mavericks' #Katie Hubbell# was fourth at 1:22.54.
LaFave earned the top spot in the 200 meter butterfly with a time of 2:29.14, more than 5 seconds ahead of the top Coyote swimmer. #Sara Hallgren# finished in fourth in 2:48.09.
The Mavericks were 1-2-5 in the 100 meter freestyle event. Hopkins won with a time of 1:00.39 while Gmeiner was second (1:01.33) and #Katey Howarter# was fifth (1:02.65).
Bechdolt came back to win the 200 meter backstroke with a time of 2:29.83. Teammate #Ariel Lahowetz# finished second in 2:32.51. McCain was fifth (2:38.18).
Kemp and Murphy finished 1-2 in the 200 meter breaststroke while Katie Hubbell was fifth. LaFave and Kemp finished first and second in the 200 meter individual medley while Murphy finished fifth.
The Mavericks earned a first and third in the final swimming event of the day, the 800 meter freestyle relay. The team of #Lucy Zamecnik#, #Kylie Hubbell#, Hopkins and Kline topped South Dakota by more than 6 seconds, finishing in a time of 8:55.82. UNO's second relay team of Howarter, Katie Hubbell, Edwards and Bechdolt finished third in 9:11.85.
UNO's #Jessica Connick# took first in the 1 meter diving with a score of 218.84. She was second in the 3 meter event with a score of 209.03.
The Mavericks now ready for the Northern Sun Championships which they will host from Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 18 – 21, at HPER Pool. Sessions start at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. except on Wednesday when there will be just one session at 6 p.m.
