OMAHA, Neb. – Freshman Becca Swanson's goal in the 66th minute was all the University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team needed as it won its regular season opener 2-0 against Rockhurst on Sunday afternoon at the UNO Soccer Field.
The teams played to a scoreless first half, but UNO was able to take the decisive 1-0 lead when junior Mykala Hanson centered a pass to the top of the goalie's box where Swanson fired a shot in the top left corner of the goal.
The Mavericks (1-0) got strong effort from its defense, holding the Hawks (0-1) to only eight shots. UNO sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Fox made four saves, notching her second career shutout.
Redshirt freshman Jerica Kuncl added an insurance goal, when she was able to outrun the Rockhurst defenders for a breakaway putting a shot in the left corner, beating Hawks' goalkeeper Alyssa Miller at the 84:26 mark. On the assist were seniors Casey Bigsby and Tara Wegehaupt.
Miller, who faced 10 shots on goal, was able to help keep Rockhurst in the game with her eight saves.
The best opportunity Rockhurst had to score was when junior Amy Lindell was able to break free for a breakaway, but Fox was able to deflect the shot off the mark.
UNO will be back in action on Saturday Sept. 6 when they host Mary at 1 p.m. at the UNO Soccer field.
