OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha women's soccer opened the 2026 regular season with a strong defensive showing Wednesday night, but ultimately falling 1-0 to Iowa State at Caniglia Field.
The Mavericks (0-1-0) held the Cyclones (1-0-0) scoreless over the final 67 minutes of the match, with Iowa State's lone goal coming in the 22nd minute. Danica Lunceford headed home a deflection following a corner kick to give the Cyclones the advantage.
Omaha's defense limited Iowa State to four shots on goal despite the Cyclones recording 12 total shots and nine corner kicks. Goalkeeper
Cadence Fagan made three saves while playing all 90 minutes in her first appearance for the Mavericks.
After Iowa State controlled much of the opening half, the Mavericks responded with a stronger second-half performance on both ends of the field. Omaha held the Cyclones to five shots over the final 45 minutes while generating all six of its shots and all three of its corner kicks after halftime.
The Mavericks began creating opportunities early in the second half, with
Haylee Braun and
Charley Kort each recording attempts in the opening 10 minutes.
Jasmyn Brown put Omaha's first shot on goal in the 67th minute, but the attempt was turned away.

Kendall Dobberstein had an attempt blocked in the 87th minute before
Nora Johnson put a shot on frame less than a minute later. The Mavericks earned a final corner kick in the 90th minute, and Fagan came forward to join the attack, sending Omaha's final attempt wide as the Cyclones held on for the 1-0 victory.
Six different Mavericks recorded a shot, with Brown and Johnson accounting for Omaha's two shots on goal. The Mavericks finished with six shots compared with Iowa State's 12 and held the Cyclones scoreless throughout the second half.
Omaha returns to action Aug. 20, traveling to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to face Northern Iowa. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT, with the match streaming on ESPN+.
