MESA, Ariz. –– Omaha's Ethan Smith carded a bogey-free final round and finished tied with three others atop the leaderboard before falling in a sudden-death playoff at the Summit League Men's Golf Championships at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, Arizona.
The senior from Doniphan, Nebraska shot a 3-under-par 68 in the final round to finish at 4-under (209), placing second.
Smith's 54-hole total of 209 is the lowest by an Omaha golfer in conference championship play, and his finish is the program's best since Thirawat Chantrakantanond also placed second in 2018. Kevin Gordon remains Omaha's only individual conference champion, winning the title in 2016.
Smith birdied his final hole of regulation, the par-4 ninth, then watched as Denver's Jet Hernandez bogeyed the par-5 18th to force a four-player playoff that included Oral Roberts' Gustav Liljberg and South Dakota's Parker Etzel. Liljberg secured medalist honors with an eagle on the 18th, leaving Smith tied for second.
Omaha finished seventh out of nine teams. North Dakota State, the only team to finish under par, claimed the team title.
Sophomore Sam Vocelka also shot under par with a final-round 69, highlighted by the first hole-in-one in Omaha's Summit League Championship history. His ace on the par-3 11th was the only hole-in-one in the tournament and the first of his career.
Senior Nolan Johnson posted a 72, his best round of the tournament, to finish tied for 27th. After opening with a 69, senior Spencer Clatt closed with a 73 to finish at 9-over (222) and tied for 30th. Senior Luke Strako recorded an even-par 71 in the final round to finish tied for 33rd.
A former junior college All-American at Iowa Western, Smith becomes one of five Mavericks to earn Summit League All-Tournament honors. His runner-up finish is the best of his career.
