SAN DIEGO — Omaha Baseball got an outstanding start from
Sam Beck as the Mavericks rolled to a 9-4 win over Western Michigan on Saturday at the Tony Gwynn Legacy Classic.
Beck, a senior right-hander, worked the first five innings, allowing no runs and one hit while striking out two. The lone hit allowed was a two-out single in the fifth.
It was the second straight day Omaha (3-3) defeated Western Michigan. On Friday, Omaha erased a 7-3 deficit by scoring five times in the seventh inning.
Beck left Saturday's game with an eight-run lead as Omaha was in control from the start.
Omaha took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a
Jackson Trout sacrifice fly and an RBI single from
Tyler Bishop.
After Trout added an RBI double in the second, the Mavericks blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning.
With two outs and no one on, Omaha drew two walks before delivering three consecutive RBI hits.
Mason Gaines hit a two-run triple, Bishop drove Gaines in with a single, and then
Hayden Lewis hit a two-run home run to right field.
Edoardo Cornelli added a two-out RBI single in the eighth to make it 9-0. Omaha thrived with two outs, as eight of its nine runs scored in those situations.
Western Michigan (1-4) scored its runs on a three-run homer in the eighth and a two-out single in the ninth.
Bishop led the offense with four hits, while
Nick Riggs had three hits. In all, Omaha collected 15 hits, stole five bases and drew 12 walks.
Omaha next begins a four-game series at Wichita State on Thursday.
