Volleyball falls to South Dakota State in five-set heartbreaker

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Omaha Volleyball fell to South Dakota State 3-2 Thursday night as the Mavericks began Summit League play.
 
Omaha (3-7, 0-1 Summit League) faced its first five-set match of the season against the Jackrabbits (7-3, 1-0). South Dakota State claimed the first set, 25-23. Omaha fought back to take the second and third sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22, respectively. SDSU came back to claim the fourth set, 25-20, before winning the deciding set by a score of 15-12.
 
The match featured 41 tied scores and 14 lead changes.
 
Faith Venable (Lincoln, Neb.) shined in her first conference outing. The freshman logged a career-high 25 kills to lead the Maverick offense. Senior Kali Jurgensmeier (Wahoo, Neb.) also set a career high with 20 kills. The two outside hitters accounted for approximately 63 percent of Omaha's points.
 
Setters Julia Owens (Tempe, Ariz.) and Davis Guetterman (Louisburg, Kan.) tallied 26 and 24 assists, respectively. It was a season-high for Guetterman. Owens was just two short of tying her career best.
 
Junior Emily Huss (Fairbury, Neb.) led the way defensively with six block assists while sophomore Sarah Galligan (Omaha, Neb.) did the work on the floor with 17 digs, one short of tying her career high.
 
The Mavericks and Jackrabbits were evenly matched on the box score. Both teams had 66 kills with 26 attack errors, 62 assists and 16 assisted blocks.
 
Omaha continues its road trip Saturday, Sept. 27 with a trip to St. Thomas. Play is set to begin at 12 p.m. CT in St. Paul, Minn. on the Summit League Network.
