OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha men's soccer (0-4-1) was unable to hold pace with Creighton (2-2-2) Wednesday as the Mavericks fell 3-2 in a thrilling Dodge Street Derby match at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Brian Edelman scored off an assist by Miguel Arilla over the left shoulder of the Mavericks' goalkeeper.
Donovan Dowling's side enjoyed a free kick opportunity in the 17th minute, though the Mavericks were unable to convert the set piece. Omaha benefited from three corner kick opportunities in the first 25 minutes.
Omaha had an answer in the 31' when Gretna, Neb. product Maguire Perkins scored his first career goal as a Maverick with the sophomore forward assisted by graduate student midfielder Yoshiki Igarashi (Tokyo, Japan) on the free kick service and senior midfielder Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden), bending the shot in from nearly the goal line.
Coming out of the halftime break, Creighton got back in front early with a pair of goals in the 55th and 57th minutes. Martin Herrera went low, connecting with Bautista Rossi to put the home side back in the lead. Just over two minutes later, Rossi scored past Omaha goalkeeper Cole Stewart from the center circle to give the Bluejays a two-goal advantage.
Junior forward Italo Jenkins (Atlanta, Ga.) took the pass from sophomore forward Bradley Takamo (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and bent the shot in the six-yard box in a 1-on-1 situation with Creighton's Matthew Hudson to bring Omaha within a goal at 3-2.
Three of the five shot attempts that followed Jenkins' goal came off the boots of Mavs attackers, though only one would reach Hudson.
