OMAHA, Neb. – Despite heat and an early kickoff time, Omaha women's soccer played hard to defeat Green Bay, 6-3.
The Mavericks (1-0-1) netted six goals to tie a record previously set in 2014 for most goals in a game in the Division I era. The Phoenix (0-2-0) stayed alive with three goals of their own.
Lauren Schmidt kicked off the scoring for Omaha in just the fifth minute with an assist from
Blanche Brethes Vacchiani straight past Green Bay's Hannah Williams.
Presley Douglas followed suit six minutes later from a cross from Schmidt. Douglas saved the ball from going out-of-bounds on the left side of the goal at the last second to bounce the ball into the opposite corner.
The Phoenix fought back with a pair of goals of their own in the 19th and 21st minutes. But, once the Mavs regained the lead, it only grew.
A minute later
Emma Hampton headed one into the goal thanks to an assist from
Grace Bartlam to put the Mavs back on top.
Addie LaRock soon followed in the 34th minute to double the lead with a well-place shot to the far left corner off an assist from
Lindsey Birch and
Kendall Dobberstein.
Payten Ivins shot to the far left corner gave the Mavs a three-goal lead in the 49th minute with an assist from Schmidt. Green Bay's Ryann Hafenbrak scored the final goal for the Phoenix in the 56th minute.
Alyssa Kellar couldn't let the match end without a goal of her own in the 59th minute thanks to some help from K. Dobberstein and
Isabelle Milne.
Of today's six goal scorers, none had scored previously this season and Douglas and LaRock were only in the second game of their collegiate careers.
The Mavs outshot the Phoenix 11 to five with 10 shots on-goal to Green Bay's five. Freshman goalkeeper
Clara Fundus recorded a pair of saves and
Charlotte Huggard had one.
Omaha will head on the road for its next match at SIUE at 5 p.m. CT on Thursday, Aug. 21.
