OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha's final regular season home game was a rough one for Mavericks pitching, as Creighton pounded out a 19-3 win in seven innings at Tal Anderson Field. Omaha (19-27, 12-16 Summit League) split the first two games of the season series with their crosstown rivals, but Creighton (35-14, 14-4 Big East) was not to be denied on a night the baseball community honored retiring Bluejays coach Ed Servais.
The Mavericks finish the regular season with a three-game series at North Dakota State University, Thursday through Saturday, with seeding for the Summit League Championship tournament on the line. Oral Roberts University will be the top-seed in the four team event, which determines the Summit League's representative in the NCAA baseball tournament. Omaha, NDSU and SDSU all have 12 wins heading into the final weekend.
Omaha leftfielder Jackson Trout (1-3, RBI) extended his hitting streak to 19 games, longest for the Mavericks this season. The league's leading hitter, third baseman Henry Zipay, hit his league-leading fifth triple of the season to extend his on-base streak to a team-high 29 games. Designated hitter Mason Gaines crushed a solo home run to deep center in the fifth inning for the Mavericks. Infielder Sam Beck (2-3) was the only Mavericks player with more than one hit against the Bluejays.
The final three conference games of the season scheduled for May 15-17 at NDSU will be streamed on the Summit League Network. Omaha is the host school in the four-team conference tournament May 21-24 at Tal Anderson Field. More information and updated seeding information can be found on the Summit League website.
Mavericks head coach Evan Porter and assistant coach Darin Ruf honored the Creighton head coach prior to the game. Ruf, in his first season as a coach for Omaha, played collegiately for Servais at Creighton before embarking on his professional playing career. Servais will retire from Creighton at the end of the season after 22 seasons at the helm of the Bluejays.
