BROOKINGS, SD - Omaha's offense came alive with a record-tying performance as the Mavericks claimed the finale of a three-game series at South Dakota State, 19-5 (7 inn.), Sunday afternoon in Brookings.
The fourth-place Mavs (12-20, 6-9) look to make up ground in the Summit League standings as they host Oral Roberts in a Thursday-Saturday three-game set at Tal Anderson Field this week, 4/17-4/19.
After his team was outscored 20-8 in losing the first two games at Erv Huether Field, Omaha head coach
Evan Porter's squad rebounded with a school record-tying 24-hit game and a run-rule victory. The two dozen hits in a game come on the anniversary of Omaha's 24-hit, 21-15 win over the Jacks in Omaha last season. The 19 runs are a season-high for 2025.
The Summit League's leading hitter
Henry Zipay had his third four-hit game of the season (4-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI) to extend his on-base streak to 16-games. He entered the weekend leading the Summit League in batting average and on-base percentage.
Jackson Trout had his fifth straight multiple-hit game (3-6, 2 R, 2 RBI, double). Eight Mavericks had multi-hit days at the plate: Trout, Zipay,
Mason Gaines (2-2, 3 RBI, double),
Blake Stenger (3-4, 3 RBI, HR),
Noah Greise (2-3, 2 RBI, double),
Grant Sommers (3-4, 3 RBI),
Drew Borner (3-4, 2 RBI, HR) and
Tyler Palmer (4-5, RBI).
Freshman
Maddox Meyer made his fourth start, earning his first career win (5 IP, 8H, 4 ER, 5 K, 0 BB), while
Brayden Curtis and
CJ Hood combined to allow one run and two hits with four strikeouts to close-out the run-rule win.
Omaha inserted three fresh bats into the starting lineup, and all were part of a second-inning rally that put the Mavericks on top for good. Omaha trailed 2-0 going into the second, when designated hitter
Oliver Mabee made his second appearance in the batting order this season and drew a walk to start the frame. Two batters later Greise, making his first start behind the dish this season, singled. Then
Grant Sommers, appearing in a game for the first time since 3/15, ripped a two-run double to tie the game. Greise later scored on a Jackrabbits error and Omaha had a lead they would not relinquish, 3-2.
Greise's sacrifice fly in the third gave Omaha a 4-2 lead before the Mavericks blew the game open with a five-run fourth, highlighted by Stenger's first home run of the season to make it 9-2. In the top of the fifth, Borner's second homer of the season, a two-run blast, and Gaines' sacrifice fly made it 12-4. The Mavs closed out their scoring with seven runs on seven hits in the sixth en route to the 19-5 final.
