BROOKINGS, SD - Mavericks baseball dropped game two of a three-game Summit League series at South Dakota State, falling 13-3 Saturday afternoon in Brookings. Omaha (11-20, 5-9) and South Dakota State (6-22, 4-8) wrap the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CT at Erv Huether Field.
For the second straight game, the Mavs (11-20, 5-9) were unable to do significant damage against the SDSU (6-22, 4-8) bullpen, and the Jackrabbits pounded Mavs relievers for twelve runs over the final three innings, securing a run-rule win with one out in the bottom of the eighth.
Omaha senior
Jackson Trout was the bright spot offensively and defensively for the Mavericks. He ripped a pair of solo home runs giving him four on the season, and finished the game 4-4 at the plate. Trout also turned in a stellar defensive play in left field, robbing a Jacks batter of extra bases.
SDSU opened the scoring in the first on a solo homer by lead-off hitter Nolan Grawe off Omaha starter
Ben Weber. Trout evened the score with his first homer of the day in the third, and the game remained tied 1-1 until the sixth.
Ben Weber posted a steady quality start, working out of trouble in the bottom of the fifth. After a lead-off double and sac bunt put a runner at third with only one out, Weber struck out Dagen Schraam and Nick Werk to get out of the inning.
But the Jackrabbits chased Weber in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch and a Keagen Jirschele RBI single to go up 3-1. Omaha reliever
Luke Gainer allowed another run on a single by Bellows to give the Jacks a 4-1 lead after six.
SDSU pulled away with four in the bottom of the seventh before closing out the game scoring five more in the eighth.
Ben Weber (1-4) took the loss while SDSU reliever Jake Goble (1-1) earned the win.
Omaha's only other runs came on solo homers in the eighth by Trout and
Tyler Bishop.
Mason Gaines was the only other Maverick to reach on a hit with a single in the eighth.
Omaha entered the weekend having won six of seven games, including last week's 11-9 win over Nebraska, their fourth defeat of a Power Four opponent this season. But after dropping the first two games at SDSU, the Mavs have dropped a Summit League series for the first time since March 23.
Zipay, who entered the weekend leading the Summit League in batting average, extended his on-base streak to 15 games after being hit by a pitch in the second.
All Summit League games are broadcast on the Summit League Network. Omaha returns to Tal Anderson Field for a three-game Summit League series April 17-19. Ticket information and team updates can be found at
