LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Mavericks did what no other team has been able to do this year and took down undefeated Kansas 9-5.
Omaha improves to 3-6 while the Jayhawks, who came into this day ranked No. 1 in RPI, drop to 8-1.
Innings 1-3
Down 1-0 and facing Big 12 Preseason Pitcher of the Year Dominic Voegele, the Mavericks broke through in the third when
Tyler Bishop got things started with his second RBI double in as many days to tie the game. The big hit would come two batters later, though, when
Trent Burkhalter came in with the bases juiced and crushed a no doubter over the wall in left for his first career grand slam.
Innings 4-6
Omaha would get another run the next inning when a red-hot
Jackson Trout laced an RBI single to left to make it 6-1. KU responded with a huge bottom of the fourth, though, as the first three batters all clubbed solo home runs to cut the lead to 6-4. Freshman
Tanner Foerstch was eventually brought in to end the inning, doing so with his first career strikeout. He would come back out for the fifth and fire a 1-2-3 inning with two more strikeouts.
Both teams would tack on another run on a couple of errors in the sixth.
Innings 7-9
Up 7-5, Omaha got a couple of much-needed insurance runs in the seventh, starting with Burkhalter who lined one to left for his fifth RBI of the day, before coming around to score on a double from
Sam Beck.
With three innings to go, Omaha turned to
Maddox Meyer to get the final nine outs. Through the seventh and eighth he allowed just one baserunner, before getting into some early trouble in the ninth. With the first two men on, a 6-4-3 double play cleared the bases and got the Jayhawks to their final out. One pop fly later and Meyer shut the door on KU to win it for Omaha.
Inside the Box Score
- All nine Mavericks starters either drove in or scored at least one run today. Burkhalter alone accounted for six of the team's runs.
- Omaha went with just the rookies on the mound today, as Cychosz (redshirt last year) along with freshmen
Carter Mick, Foerstch, and Meyer got the job done.
