THIBODAUX, La. - With a little help from the weather, the Mavericks picked up their first win of 2025 today when they led Nicholls State 5-2 in the ninth inning before the game was officially called due to heavy rain.
Omaha begins the second week of the season at 1-3, while the Colonels are 2-2.
Innings 1-3
In the first outing of his career,
Isaac Cychosz worked around a two-out baserunner in each of his first two innings to keep it scoreless heading into the third.
In the top of the inning, Omaha would capitalize on a couple of walks when
Jackson Trout launched a three-run shot to left for his first home run of the year to give the Mavericks an early lead. The colonels would continue to bring the pressure with two outs in the bottom of the third when three-straight singles brought in their first run of the day.
Innings 4-6
After Nicholls State got another run back in the bottom of the fourth,
Carter Mick came in for his second career appearance and tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth to keep it a 3-2 game.
Omaha would tack on another run in the sixth after
Tyler Bishop reached on an error by the third baseman and later came around to score on a sac fly from
Grant Sommers. Mick would get the first out in the bottom half of the inning with his second strikeout of the day, before
Reed Scott came in for his first appearance of the year and promptly struck out the next two batters.
Innings 7-9
Trout got the Mavericks another insurance run in the top of the seventh on a fielder's choice that brought in
Kael Babin.
Oliver Mabee got the ball for the bottom of the inning where he would retire the side in order, before throwing a scoreless eighth as well.
In the top of the ninth, Omaha got two on with one out before the rain started to pick up, prompting the umpires to call the game.
Inside the Box Score
- In two relief outings, Mick has so far gone three scoreless to begin his collegiate career. He also claimed the win tonight.
- Trout now has four career games with at least three runs driven in.
