Volleyball sweeps Denver at home

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Volleyball swept Denver on Saturday for its fifth sweep of the season at Baxter Arena.

The Mavericks (8-14, 5-8 Summit League) and Pioneers (15-10, 7-7) fought throughout the match. Omaha took the first set 25-22. In the second set, Denver came back from a deficit to force extra points which the Mavs won to win 26-24. The third and final set ended with a 25-21 win for the Mavericks to seal the match.

While the first two sets saw a lot of back and forth with nine tie scores and a handful of lead changes in each set, the third set was different. The Mavs and Pios were tied four times throughout the set, but the lead never changed with favor pointing toward Omaha.

Senior Kali Jurgensmeier (Wahoo, Neb.) once again led the offense with 14 kills. Jurgensmeier has hit double-digit kills in 18 of the 22 matches the Mavericks have played so far this season. Freshman Faith Venable (Lincoln, Neb.) was next up with nine kills. Venable also recorded a pair of aces.

Sophomore Julia Owens (Tempe, Ariz.) tied her career-high with four aces against the Pioneers.

With the conference tournament drawing closer, the Mavericks sit sixth in the conference standings. The top six teams will make the trip to Brookings, S.D. to play for a Summit League tournament title.

Omaha is heading out on the road for the final trip of the regular-season. The Mavs will face North Dakota on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. CT before playing North Dakota State on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. CT. Omaha will return home for the regular-season finale against Kansas City on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. CT.
